AND SOME CATS TOO

LUCKY...my cat sister
Page dedicated to my sister Lucky the cat. She is jealous I wrote so many things about dogs, had ask me to give her a page, well Lucky this page is all yours.

Lucky was saved from mommy's old office staffhouse about 11 years ago. She was accidently locked in the toilet by some outstation staff that had gone back for festive celebration. Mommy told me she doesn't know what struck her, but she went to the staffhouse that one day to check on electrical switches and the gas cylinder. Then when she was about to go out, she suddenly opened the toilet door and found a kitty there. This kitty was barely 2 months old and was really very dehydrated and hungry. She couldn't even MEOW.

Mommy immediately put water on her lips and put her in a box and brought her home. Mommy nursed this kitty back to health and named her LUCKY, coz mommy says she's really lucky to have been found or else!!

My Dog My HERO!

English Bulldog who defied his poor swimming skill to swim deep out into a lake and rescue a burlap sack containing 6 abandoned kittens!

vgsd.jpg
English Bulldogs are notoriously bad swimmers. With a giant head and chest compared to a lighter tail end, they have a tendency to go bottoms up in the water. So this doggy is EXTRA brave.
Napoleon, an obedient and well behaved two year old white English Bulldog in Michigan abruptly left his master's side yesterday and raced out across a road and into a nearby lake.
Napoleon's owner met him in the driveway as the bulldog came back up out of the lake dragging something in his mouth. It looked like a burlap sack, and Napoleon appeared determined to drag it up from the shore and back to his master's side.
It was then that Napoleon's owner heard the meowing and realized that there were abandoned kittens inside the bag! Six kittens in total, although two of them didn't survive and the remaining four were in bad shape. Napoleon's mom cared for the survivor's for the next two weeks until they could be taken in to the city pet adoption center and found new homes.
Napoleon got a much deserved hero's welcome at the adoption center as crowds gathered to praise the brave bulldog and cuddle the rescued kittens.

Maya the pitbull, courageously saved her owner from a vicious male attacker

You don't get to be the 2008 Dog of the Year for nothing, and this pooch is no exception. Maya took home this year's honors for courageously saving Angela Marcelino, her owner, from a vicious male attacker. The pitbull's act of bravery earned some high praise from the Animal Miracle foundation, who was happy to report that "the pitbull breed can be hero dogs just like any other breed."

Half-Breed Wolf Dog Hero Rescues Elderly Owners From Snowstorm

Wednesday, December 06, 2006
NEW YORK —  When Eve and Norman Fertig rescued a sick, two-week-old half wolf, half German shepherd puppy from a breeder almost seven years ago, they'd never dreamed that the animal one day would save their lives.
Shana, a half wolf dog/half German shepard who saved an elderly couple from a treacherous snow storm. When Shana found Norman and Eve trapped by snow, she went to work, diligently digging out a tunnel through which she would pull the couple back to the safety of their home.

"If you're vicious to a human being, they'll become fighters," Eve said, but even wolves, "once you treat them right and raise them in your house, they're magnificent."

Katrina saved a drowning man...

Hurricane Katrina was a miserable occurance for everyone down south, but inspiring stories of heroism have helped give victims something to smile about. That's certainly the case with Katrina, the ironically named black labrador who saved a drowning man before rising flood waters claimed his life. The dog, who was later rescued herself by rescue teams, was honored at that year's Genesis Awards with a standing ovation.

Dachshund goes for help after owner collapses By Associated Press,  Aug 9, 2010

Missy is held by her thankful owner after she went for help after a fall.
YAMHILL, Ore. (AP) – A small dog who refused to return home until a neighbor followed her helped rescue her owner after he collapsed at home following heart surgery.
Charles Mitchell said he was working in his yard last week in the Oregon wine country town of Yamhill when an 11-year-old Dachshund named Missy scampered up and refused to leave.
Mitchell told the dog to go home, but she refused. When he decided to follow her across the street to investigate, he found his neighbor – Charlie Burdon – had collapsed inside his home.
Burdon had suffered an attack of vertigo and is recovering. However, Burdon and Mitchell – who have known each other for years – both say Missy is their hero.

The dog who thinks he's a lion!

It's not every day that a dog saves its family from armed pirates at sea, but amazingly, that's exactly what Kankuntu did. When Peter Lee found himself about to be hijacked on his 41 foot yacht by armed pursuers, the dog (who "thinks he's a lion") leapt right into action, furiously attacking the gunmen until one of them shot and stabbed the pooch between his shoulder blades. Amazingly, the dog was nursed back to the health and the family continued with their voyage.

Pets In Women’s Shelters Offer Unconditional Love

Lifesaving Dog, Nyla (a mix breed) Helps a Family in Crisis!
Sheila had had Nyla since she was a puppy. When Nyla had puppies, Sheila's husband had severely harmed the puppies by throwing them against a wall. And he didn’t hesitate to kick Nyla whenever he felt like it. But Sheila had always loved Nyla as her own kid........

Nyla is a dog that risked her own life to save her human owner from the threat of fire. When Sheila found herself surrounded by smoke and flames, unable to see in front of her, Nyla courageously buided her toward a nearby door, barking whenever Sheila lost track of her. While her home and belongings were destroyed, Sheila was guided to safety, noting that "Nyla could have left anytime. Instead, she chose to stay and risk her own life and face death to save me."
Sheila's home and belongings were destroyed in the fire. But the fire was nothing compared to the violence of her abusive husband which Sheila had been living with for years in Ohio. Now, she was finally ready to take her kids and make the courageous break. However, the first woman’s shelter she visited in Florida – the state where her brother lives - wouldn’t accept Nyla ..........

A Beagle who literally bit "911" ...
In a nearly unbelievably story titled "Dog Makes Cell Phone Call to Save Owner's Life", readers learn about Belle, a beagle who literally bit "911" into Kevin Weaver's cell phone after the diabetic man collapsed from a seizure. Said Weaver, "there's no doubt in my mind that I'd be dead if I didn't have Belle", who became the first canine to win VITA's Wireless Samaritan Award. Evidently, the pooch had been trained to bite down on the phone's keypad in the event of an emergency!

Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

I am truly not a cow, but sometimes mommy can see me eating grass. Well I am not the only dog that does this. Perhaps the article below will answer your question...

Pica is the technical term for the disorder characterized by eating things that aren't food. Sometimes pica indicates that your dog has some type of nutritional deficiency, though it is often simply a sign of boredom, especially when practiced by puppies and younger dogs.
A dog eating grass-1

Dogs eating grass is actually quite common (it has been observed in wild dogs, too, and may be completely natural) and this form of pica does not usually cause too many problems. In fact, most veterinarians consider it a normal dog behavior. One small-scale study of 49 dog owners whose dogs had regular access to grass and other plants found that 79% of the dogs had eaten plants at some time. Another survey about plant-eating dogs found that grass was the most commonly eaten plant.

Why is my dog eating grass?

There are a variety of reasons your dog might be grazing on your lawn.
Some people propose that dogs might turn to eating grass when they don't feel well as a way to make themselves vomit, and then feel better. Others dispute this idea, on the basis that dogs are not proven to be smart enough to decide to treat an upset stomach by eating grass.
Evidence suggests that most dogs that eat grass aren't unwell beforehand, or at least they don't seem so. In fact, fewer than 10% of dogs seem to be sick before eating grass, according to their owners. And grass-eating doesn't usually lead to throwing up -- less than 25% of dogs that eat grass vomit regularly after grazing.
Other suggested reasons why your dog might be eating grass include improving digestion, treating intestinal worms, or fulfilling some unmet nutritional need, including the need for fiber. One published study reports on a miniature poodle that ate grass and then vomited every day for seven years. Three days after putting the dog on a high-fiber diet, the owner reported that the dog stopped eating grass entirely. And, of course, there is also the possibility that your dog simply likes the way grass tastes or feels.

Should I stop my dog from eating grass? If so, how?

If you suspect your dog is eating grass because he's bored, it might be beneficial to be sure he's getting enough exercise. Engage him in some fun activities. Try tossing a Frisbee or playing another interactive game with him, or buy him a sturdy chew toy to keep him occupied.
On the chance that your dog's pica behavior is caused by a nutritional deficiency, switching to a better dog food, especially a high-fiber variety, could help alleviate the problem.
Although most experts agree that grazing itself isn't harmful, one thing to keep in mind is that certain herbicides and pesticides used on lawns can be quite toxic, especially if ingested. In fact, fertilizers were one of the top 10 causes of pet poisoning in 2008. Additionally, a number of common house and garden plants are toxic, which could lead to problems if your dog munches on them along with the lawn. To make sure the plants in and around the area where your dog is eating grass aren't dangerous, check the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center web site, which maintains a list of toxic and non-toxic plants.

ANIMAL KILLERS, ABUSERS and DOG EATERS!!!

'Serdang cat killer' may not be prosecuted due to red tape

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011 12:36:00
Serdang cat killer
CAUGHT: The video clip of the incident

THE Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) may not be able to prosecute 'Serdang cat killer' Chow Xiao Wei, 21.
The decision to bring her to justice is being hampered by the lack of legal support as the process involves going through multiple governmental agencies.
DVS director-general Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin said one of the delays in prosecuting Chow, who had admitted publicly for torturing three kittens with an umbrella and stomping them to death in March, was due to the authenticity of the video.
"This is the role of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as they probably have to develop protocols for video authentication that is accepted under general multimedia laws. We have submitted the video to them.
"Subsequently, the DVS, with advice from the Attorney-General's (AG) Chambers, will open the case for further investigations."
However, Dr Abdul Aziz said an investigation methodology could not be determined.
"This is because the Animals Act 1953 does not have the provision for a video recording to be used as court evidence. The government should develop an effective Act to prosecute perpetrators for any offence based on video evidence."
However, several lawyers said there was no need for DVS to limit themselves to the Animals Act 1953 as there were other avenues for the department to bring Chow to face justice (see below).
Asked on the status of the amendment of the Act, which was called for by various animal rights groups, Dr Abdul Aziz said the AG's Chambers was doing their best to finalise changes recommended by DVS and the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry.
"The next stage will be the inclusion of provision for prosecution of cases based on video evidence."
Upon checking with MCMC, The Malay Mail learnt the video is not in their possession and instead with CyberSecurity Malaysia. However, CyberSecurity Malaysia declined to comment.
Currently, animal abusers found guilty under the Act only face a maximum fine of RM200 and a threat of six months jail.
Animal activists have asked for the fine to be increased to RM50,000 so as to serve as a proper deterrent.

Prosecute cat killer under Evidence Act, say lawyers

SEVERAL lawyers told The Malay Mail there are other avenues for the department to bring the cat killer to justice.
Senior criminal lawyer Salim Bashir said, even if the Animals Act 1953 did not have the provisions for video evidence to be submitted in court, the Evidence Act 1950 did.
"As such, the Serdang cat killer can be prosecuted under this Act. They could also bring in a charge through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission using Section 90(a) of the Evidence Act 1950.
"If the conditions in the Section are satisfied, this could overwrite the Animals Act 1950."
Senior lawyer Datuk Seri Shafee Abdullah said it was not entirely correct to put the blame on the Animals Act 1953 for not having a provision for video evidence in court.
"The Animals Act 1953 governs matters of substance, including offences, created to protect animals. It does not wholly cover procedure and evidential matters. Similarly, the Penal Code provides for offences of cruelty against animals.
"All the offence-creating statutes must use the Evidence Act 1950 for evidence admissibility purposes as it is a statute of general application. The Evidence Act covers evidence by video or Internet provided preconditions of admissibility are met."
Shafee said the Animals Act could be blamed in this matter as the Evidence Act governed presentation of all evidence in any offence.
Lawyer Datuk Jahabardeen Mohamed Yunoos said the video of the cat abuse was not critical.
"If the authority is serious about charging the cat killer in court, then go ahead. The authentication of the video has to be done by any certified forensic department such as the police.
"The video in this case is relevant but not critical as the abuser has admitted to the offence she had committed. There are also other evidence such as news reports written based on the public apology she made and the journalists who were present during the Press conference."
Jahabardeen said the level of animal rights consciousness in this country was extremely low.
"It is embarrassing that animal abusers found guilty under the Animals Act 1953 only face a maximum fine of RM200 and a threat of six months jail. Furthermore, the provisions under Sections 428 and 429 of the Penal Code is highly disappointing in terms of animal's life as it is tied to economic value."

Another Abused Case

Thursday, January 20, 2011

A rescuer friend alerted us about this dog after she herself was tipped off by a concerned neighbour. We spoke to the neighbour and he said the owners had not been feeding their dog enough and this was not their first case of dog abuse. The dogs is skin and bones and we shudder to think of the suffering it must have gone through. The family lives in Puchong Intan and here's her narration:

I got a call regarding this dog from a man last Sunday morning. He explained to me then that the owners were nowhere in sight initially, and that this dog was 'about to die'. He'd tried to call out and feed the dog but it was too weak to move.
I couldn't go to get the dog myself, and so made arrangements with a veterinary clinic to pick it up . Thirty minutes later, the man called again and told me that the owners WERE in fact home, and he put them on the phone with me. When I questioned them, they told me that the dog had 'been lying that way for a week' and refused to explain what had led to it's condition.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9SxJUIFd9LLXs6Nm_SxCg9Dj6dnhu3G7rzDYmT-glQZ4L2p7iYb3IiJmii68oAXcGYbDTetd6e4h2ZqEf45v_Kam7xJ14Zz71WoHAFcm1sNlpkiO13Ou-wCUvUvBukxolFutnT1aW1zs/s1600/IMG_2734.JPG Then they questioned my intentions, and after my explanation, told me that whatever i was going to do, 'kita tak akan bayar apa-apa untuk anjing ini'. I assured them otherwise and they agreed to hand over the dog.
More than THREE hours later, the drivers from the veterinary clinic arrived to pick the dog up. The rather inconsiderate receptionists kept calling to ask if the deposits they needed had been made, and quoted that they could just cancel the house-call if otherwise. No one really cared that the dog was dying.
Merely minutes after arriving at the clinic, just as i'd placed a call to another vet to pick the dog up from the first clinic, I got a call from one of the vets saying that the dog had passed away. A burial arrangement was going to cost Rm150, and so I told them to bring the dog over to my grandfather's farm instead.
I took this picture on Tuesday. I hadn't had the chance to visit the dog during the rescue attempt, and so this was very disturbing. My grandparents kept repeating how 'very big and beautiful' this dog was. The vets say it's a Great Dane, middle aged.
I hope that something can be done to have this dog's voice heard.

We at MDDB are greatly disturbed and will also forward this to the DVS and follow-up. Why do these people keep dogs if they don't want to care for them? What kind of values do they subscribe to - don't they understand that dogs are living beings that can suffer pain and anguish just like us? Given this sad situation, MDDB will also prioritise the bringing dog abuse cases to book this year. Please support us to teach the real animals about love and compassion.

Abused Case (Klang)

We received a call recently about a family that regularly abuses its dog. We have the adress as well as the necessary evidence and want to lodge a report with the DVS. But before we do that we want to lodge a mass police report. Please respond here if you want to join us in lodging the report - probably tomorrow night - and we'll pick a suitable police station. Please watch the video to see for yourself - the abuse occurs at one of the houses located on the righthand side of the screen. This happened in Klang.

This pup was nearly dinner to some foreign workers in our country!Wednesday, October 27, 2010

A lady from Klang saw a group of men catching a young dog and placing it into a sack while on her way to a shop on Tuesday night. The dog struggled and the man holding the sack swung it and hit a lamp post several times. When they realised they were being watched, the man dumped the sack and left the place with his group. Fearing for her safety, the lady returned home and went back the following day and saw the dog was still lying on the sack without moving. Yesterday evening her daughter brought the dog to us and we have admitted her at one of our panel vets. There was nothing wrong with the young dog except for some swelling around the abdomen - probably due to being whacked against the lamp post. She had refused to move from the spot out of fear and also trauma. Going by the facts given to us, we believe the group of men were Vietnamese and the dog was probably their dinner for the day. How do we tackle a problem such as this? For them, the dog is a food source just like cattle, poultry and pigs - among others. The only way would be to make dog meat consumption illegal here - like how it is in countries such as Taiwan. But would the authorities do this? I am sure most of you would recall a top ranking official from the Department of Veterinary Services who said that dog meat consumption should be regarded as being okay. There are many dog meat restaurants in this country - where do they get their supply? From the pounds? Where?

Yet another cruelty case
This German Shepherd lives in Jalan Anggerik Vanilla 31/98F, Canal Gardens, Kota Kemuning.
Its brutal owners keep its mouth tied up with rafia string everyday probably to keep it from barking.
According to the complainant, the dog is suffering and the
leash is also very short that the dog can only sit.
So much so that it sits on its urine and stool and as a result it's side is peeling from infection.
We have forwarded the complaint and picture to the Selangor DVS and hope that action will be taken soon.

Mommy is sick to the guts helping me with my blog... I saw tears in her eyes when she sees pictures like these but because I wanted to create awareness to more people how some unlucky dogs are being mistreated and abused for no apparent reason and she also shares my thoughts, she had to help me blog. Sorry mommy as I have no fingers like yours to type the keyboard, it saddens me to see you with tears. I love you and I know I am in good hands...sometimes I hope our home can be bigger so that mommy can keep a few more of those unlucky dogs or even help foster some... but SIGH! some neighbors don't like the idea though.

Cruel Malaysians
Thursday March 18, 2010

What's going on....

Just when we thought we can take a short break from advocacy and update our supporters about our rescue work - this crops up. We are shocked and appalled that human beings can actually resort to such cruelty. The letter says the six young people were told that the dog had been tied-up like that for quite a while - didn't it kick the conscience of the people who had passed by? Our rescuer friend Miza Nordin says she will go an look for the dog this evening as it definetely needs medical attention. The stick has also been identified as the pole used by council dog catchers. So, there must be truth that the dog was tied in that position by DBKL workers. We called KTM and its public relations officer Fazil said he too was shocked with the pictures. He has asked for emails to be directed to him and said he would redirect them all to the KTMB president.

Here's the letter which appeared in Malaysiakini. Take a look at the picture.

M Nisha
Mar 17, 10
4:43pm

I am writing because of a grievous incident that took place on Monday, March 15 at about 3pm at Kepong Central KTM Station. My friends and I (six of us) were there to take the train to the Bank Negara station.

After parking our cars, we heard a dog howling, more like a painful cry. Then, we noticed a dog being tied to the grill (steel fence) of the KTM station. As we approached the dog, we stood aghast at the sight.

The stray dog's leg and neck was tied very tightly to the grill and a piece of wood had been shoved down inside its throat! The dog was bleeding and its feces were all around it. The string was attached to a pole in the KTM station.

Immediately, we confronted the KTM workers. They said that it was done by Kuala Lumpur City Hall workers because a minister was to be visiting the station next week. They failed to explain further.

At once, we called the SPCA and the Paws animal welfare society. The SPCA responded efficiently by informing us that an animal control officer would be there soon. We made a slight commotion in front of the KTM station but the KTM workers were not concerned at all.

After about an hour, as we were returning to the KTM Kepong Central Station, we received a call from the SPCA officer stating that the dog was now not tied up and was moving around. When we arrived, the dog was limping. The same KTM workers avoided us as we tried to confront them. A passer-by told us that the dog has been that way for quite some time.

The SPCA officer could not capture the dog as it walked away for quite a distance. He advised us to write to the media and to the SPCA as well.

Doenn't our country's animal rights support the idea that an animal has the right to live its life without being harmed and hurt by humans? We realize that people define the meaning of animal rights and abuse in different ways but aren't the citizens of our country merciful?

This dog could have been just put to sleep if it had been harming the public or causing a nuisance. Why stick a wooden stick down its throat?

So people, its back to pushing for justice again.

CRUEL DOG CATCHERS! CRUEL COUNCIL! Dog Owners...Stand Up For Your Dogs!

Another local council mayhem?

by Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better on Saturday, 11 June 2011

We received these pictures from an independant rescuer who told us that it was taken just after Chinese New Year at a local council pound in Selangor. Apparently, the rescuer's friend had gone to the pound to bail out her dog that was caught after it had run out of the house. She said what she saw there shocked her to the core. We are currently sending our people (undercover of course)  to the pound to look see on a regular basis. We cannot disclose which pound because we do not want the local councils' apologists to immediately work on a cover-up. We are also not able to push hard as the pictures are not dated. Most of the dogs looked like they were pets and there was no food and water, therefore they ate the carcass of a dead dog in the enclosure. Its time the local councils are brought top book for their inhumane act.

Strays allegedly caught and shot in full view of children    Wednesday May 25, 2011

By ZALINAH NOORDIN

Photos by ZAINUDDIN AHAD and GOH GAIK LEE

RESIDENTS who witnessed an alleged open-shooting of stray dogs by the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) have expressed shock and disgust over the inhumane act.

Peace shattered: Rinkenberger watching over her children playing in front of her house in Sunway Mutiara, Batu Maung, where the shooting of stray dogs has allegedly taken place recently

The shooting was said to have been carried out in residential areas and in the midst of children who were walking to a nearby kindergarten.
The residents are now urging the council and the Penang government to review the method used to dispose off the strays because open-shooting could pose a danger to the public.

A witness to the incident who wants to be known only as Rowe, said that of late, there were many strays roaming at Sunway Mutiara in Batu Maung but the animals did not cause any harm to anyone.
She said that she saw a few council workers shooting the dogs in her neighbourhood a few days ago, leaving behind “a trail of blood.”

“When they arrived, the dogs were sleeping under cars parked outside the houses here. They lured one of the dogs out, wrestled it to the ground and shot it several times in its head despite the dog not behaving aggressively,” she said.

Inhuman method: File photos of stray dogs being chased, trapped and shot during a local council operation to reduce the stray population in housing areas

Another resident, who wished to be known as Shu, a homemaker, said her three young children had witnessed the brutal slaying and they were now traumatised by the incident.
“What if the bullets had gone astray? The children could have been harmed,” she said.
American Sarah Rinkenberger, 32, who resides in the same area, said she was not at home during the shooting but she learnt about it from neighbours.
“I’m surprised such a method is still being used in this country. Back in America, strays are caught and sent to the pound but they are never shot in the open,” she said.
Rinkenberger, who helps to manage a language centre here with her husband, said it was her personal belief that God created both humans and animals, therefore dogs must be treated in a good way.

A spokesperson from the MPPP’s Urban Services, Public Health and Licensing Department denied that the council had shot the stray dogs in such a manner.
However, the spokesperson said that shooting would be carried out if there was no other way.
“We are trying to use humane methods such as tranquillisers and we have applied for licensing from the police last year but we have yet to hear from them,” the spokesperson said, stressing that the department would only act based on complaints from the public.

A non-governmental organisation called Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) Penang coordinator Chuah Kok Han said the alleged shooting should not be justified by any party.
“It is wrong to use such a method to cull animals. MPPP must stop doing this and the state Veterinary Services Department must ensure that it is stopped immediately,” said Chuah.
He added that nowadays most people no longer tolerate cruelty towards dogs.
“We are a civilised society and we expect relevant authorities such as the local councils to behave in a civilised manner when it comes to handling animal-related issues,’’ said Chuah.
Chuah also said that MDDB Penang plans to meet Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over the issue.
Children’s Protection Society Penang secretary Magdeline Ng-Leong said the safety of children should not be compromised under whatever circumstances.

“The council should use other methods instead of openly shooting the strays in the presence of children.”
Penang Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) administrator Lily Leng said that stray dogs should not be destroyed in full view of the public.
“We received endless complaints about dogs being shot in public and I think there should be other ways to handle stray dogs instead of shooting them openly.
“Not only is it dangerous, the whole ordeal is disturbing and heart-wrenching to watch. Strays should be put down in private and not in the open,” she said.

The Truth Shall Prevail

It has came to our knowledge today that Penang State Exco YB Chow Kon Yeow has forwarded a letter to The Star requesting for a public apology for the publication of an article entitled, “Strays allegedly caught and shot in full view of children” dated May 25, 2011 - (http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=%2F2011%2F5%2F25%2Fnorth%2F8739429&sec=North). He is apparently accusing the report of tarnishing the image of our local councils and publishing misleading photos on the report. And if, in the case that The Star did not make an apology within the next 2 days, immediate action will be taken.

We are startled to learn that YB Chow Kon Yeow would go to such extend to conceal and mend the image of the local councils which has long gone under the drain in the eyes of the public. The photos, though not current, were taken during a Penang Municipal Council dog catching and killing escapade about two years ago. It is also clearly stated in the article that the pictures are file pictures. Is the YB Chow claiming that dogs are no longer shot on the streets as depicted by the photos? And by the way, are we not encouraged to practice transparency in our country, as suggested by our CM Lim Guan Eng? Do we even have the Freedom of Speech? Or is our YB Chow really so naive that he thinks that by having the journalist publishing a public apology; it will help to clear their names and silent us all? Worst still YB Chow was a former journalist before becoming a politician and his present stance of muzzling the media is indeed shocking. Bear in mind that the root cause of such major explosion from the public was because majority of the people here have witnessed with our own eyes how brutally and barbaric the local councils are when it comes to culling of dogs. It’s a shame that while everybody is aware of this cruelty, our YB Chow is still trying to shield those barbarians! You have truly disappointed us, YB Chow as we have all the while thought you are a great person with a passion for animals. Guess we are so wrong about you!

Rather than going after a journalist who is just trying to reveal nothing but the truth, we would suggest to the YB to work efficiently and put more effort into improving our state and proving to the citizens that indeed our state/country is a loving society who practice Animals Right. As quoted by Mahatma Gandhi, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. We want our next generations to be raised in a country that respects and apply moral values like: responsibility, compassion, non-violence, tolerance of all forms of life! The world could no longer tolerate extreme animal cruelty!

Despite this entire unimaginable ordeal, our streets are still filled with strays. This has proven that the current proposition to deal with strays’ problem is not working and it will never be. Here, we are now in the year 2011, but yet it’s as if we are going backwards to the Dark Ages and kill all strays. We can no longer be called humans if we allow these terrible actions to take place. We can’t raise our children as blood thirsty murderers who learn that it’s okay to kill innocent animals.

We believe all Independent Rescue Groups are willing to work together with the local councils to cope with the over population of strays in the most humane way, which is through TNRM (Trap, Neuter, Release/Rehome, Manage) and create a stray-free society. However, we never would understand why the government had never made the initiative to accept our proposition. In fact, MDDB & MCCP Northern has emailed a draft copy of the proposal to YB Chow Kon Yeow and requested to be granted an appointment to meet up for further discussions on the welfare of animals but we have heard nothing from YB Chow thus far. Is it because our topic is of no political interest to him? Whatever the reason, we shall not give up until our voices are heard!

Please write to YB Chow at chowkonyeow@penang.gov.my telling him what you think of his move of bullying reporters and the media in order to hide the ugly truth. Tell him that his move also contradicts what the Penang government, under CM Lim Guan Eng, is projecting itself as. Please also cc copies of your mail to YB Chow to:

Dog shot in own compound by Council People! Another dog abuse case by Johor local authority... by Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better on Tuesday, 17 May 2011

We received a shocking telephone call from one Mr Tan a few minutes ago and are horrified wuth his story. Apparently his dog has a habit of accompanying his anak to the nearby bus stop when the child is going to school and then would return home. Last wek when the anak opened the gate and stepped out of the compound with the dog, Majlis Perbandaran Johor Baru Tengah Municipal Council workers shot the dog. His child was standing next to the dog when this happened. The dog managed to run back into the compound but the local council worker walked into the compound and took the dog out and shot it again to kill it. Mr Tan says that the council should have compounded him for allowing the dog out and not kill the poor defenceless animal. He is also outraged that the council workers discharged the firearm when his child was standing there. He wants to lodge a police report and pursue the matter. His nearest police station is in Johor Jaya - we need people in Johor to be there with him. Those wanting to accompany him to the police station please respond to this post or call 019-3576477....

...UPDATE  by Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better on Tuesday, 14 June 2011

We received a call from Mr Tan, whose dog was brutally shot by Majlis Perbandaran Johor Bahru Tengah (MPJBT) recently. He thanked MDDB for pressuring the district council and pursuing the matter because the council people had admitted their mistake. According to Mr Tan had had a meeting with the council this morning and the initial excuse given as to why they had forced their way into his compound to shot the dos was that it was already injured in the leg.
They said that since the dog was already shot in the leg once, it was best to finish the job. Mr Tan then showed the officer the dog's veterinary records and said that the dog would have been taken to the vet for the bullet in the leg to be removed and saying that they had to kill the dog because of the leg injury was baseless. Mr Tan had also asked for the apology in writing and the officer that had met him had asked him to come and meet the council president. Mr Tan said the council officer had also stated that dogs were no longer being shot. We are happy that Mr Tan is going all out to battle the council over what they had done and I hope more people will do so in the event their dogs have been brutalised by the local councils. Mr Tan will also arrange another meeting with the council people, together with the media, where a written apology is given to him.

DUH!

WE have been informed that exco Dr Xavier Jayakumar and the three member CAD committee will be inspecting the Klang pound tomorrow. Of course, everything will be in tip top condition as prior notice has been given. Next, we can expect a grand announcement in Petnegative that the pound was in tip top condition with the dogs being loved and pampered before execution. Petnegative will also brag that the superb conditions is because of its efforts. Brings to mind the incident whereby the committee's resident cad went on to announce how he had wheeled around and taught the Klang saintly dog catchers to 'humanely' catch dogs and that wire loops would no longer be used. Barely, a couple of days later this happened:  http://malaysiandogsdeservebetter.blogspot.com/2010/06/this-is-help-from-providence.html
Of course we would like to put on record that the Klang Municipal Council's Health Department and its officers have now come to understand the need to show compassion for dogs and are going around looking for land to put-up a proper pound. They are also now very cooperative and we are very appreciative of this.
However, the dog catchers are the same old brutal bunch who know not what compassion is.

Given this, they do not need the 3-member CAD committee, with Dr Xavier in tow, to give them prior notice before a visit and then give the thumbs-up sign for a good job done.
The smart thing would be to go there unannounced.

P/S Dr Xavier, with due respect, could you speak to rescuers instead of the chief cad for feedback on how to manage pounds and tackle the stray problem. He is giving you wrong and bad advise.

Following above article, this is what happened:

THIS IS HELP FROM PROVIDENCE

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Things work out mysteriously sometimes and what happened on Wed evening was no exception. We received a frantic call from a lady we know in Taman Radzi in Klang that Klang Municipal Council's (MPK) 'noble' dog catchers had 'caught' two dogs belonging to her neighbours. Both the dogs were on leash and were being walked by their Myanmar domestic helper. Apparently, the dog catchers had stopped their van and threatened to slap the maid and grabbed both leashes from her. They then looped the necks of both dogs - 5-year-old Angel and 14-year-old Major with wires and dragged them to their parked van. This was about 7.00pm. Now, Major is about 98-years-old in human age and is able to merely waddle about when walking and so dragging him with the wire was indeed a major assault on him.

Dr Dashant with the terrified Amgel - note that the dog was on a leash when abducted by the MPK goons. They had also tightened the wire around angel's neck.

Meanwhile, the domestic helper had run back and alerted her employers. When they approached the dog catchers, the MPK workers, whom Arsehole described as being noble, became menacing. When the owners went to get their dog, the dog catchers told them to keep away or they would otherwise strangle both the dogs with the wires. To prove their point, they twisted the wire around poor Major's neck and the dog started chocking. However, by then neighbours were all out and the MPK van was blocked from leaving the area. The dog catchers then dragged both dogs and and chucked them into cages behind the van. There were two other dogs in the van - a fat white dog wearing a collar and a Rottie. After much argument both Angel and Major were released but the workers refused to release the other two. However, they promised to return them to the homes from where they had abducted the dogs. They said we could follow them to ensure that both the dogs were duly returned. Major and Angel's owner Dr Dashant and an MDDB representative followed the van but instead of returning the dogs, the dog catchers sped off to the MPK pound instead.

The wires in the dog catchers van.

We followed. At the pound we saw them brutally dragging the fat white dog out of the van and banging her around before dumping her into an enclosure with other dogs which have obviously been there longer. By doing this they are knowingly infecting the healthy fat dog with the various infections found in the pound. This is akin to subjugating the dog to some sort of biological weapon with the intent of killing it. At the pound some of the workers behaved like hoodlums and one of the roughed Dr Dashant up and grabbed his cell phone. We also saw that pedigrees were kept separately and one of the dogs a Rottie, was dying and from our experience we can tell it is distemper. They had placed another healthy dog near the dying dog - didn't the Selangor Department of Veterinary Services brief these pound sadists that distemper is air borne. The DVS vet in charge of the Klang pound should be removed, given to his/her failure to ensure that the dogs brought to the pound are safe from the various infections present there.

The fat dog that was abducted and thrown into the enclosure to be infected. Is this some kind of biological warfare strategy launched against dogs?

What happens when owners bring their dog home and in the process their other pets are also infected? Therefore, the pound still operates as a morgue instead of a place to hold dogs pending being claimed by owners or adopted. Coming back to Dr Dashant's issue, police reports have been lodged and the family had gone to see Klang MP Charles Santiago over the issue. Mr Santiago revealed he had sent over 100 text messages to MPK acting health director Zul Abbas for a meeting but the latter was yet to respond. We believe he is hiding behind the so-called CAT committee. We would like to know why MPK was still using wires when the CAT committee and the SPCA claim that they were no longer doing so. Didn't the CAT committee claim it had successfully trained the dog catchers to use more humane methods? Weren't we told that wires were no longer used. What happened on Wed was far from it. So, this means the CAT committee had failed miserably and should be disbanded. The onus is now on the SPCA to do what PAWS, Pat Lim and Jackie Tsang have done - abandon the CAT committee. We were also told by an MPK staff that the dog catchers resort to abducting dogs to justify their claim for overtime. Whenever they work after 4.00pm - it is considered overtime and they are required to justify why they had to work overtime. Since they have been packing the pound with strays - not many are left on the streets any more - therefore they have resorted to doing what they did 0n Wed - abducting dogs. Write to the relevant people to demand for the removal of Zul Abbas given his failure to manage the dog catching unit.

The Rottie which was dying at the pound. From the signs - we believe that its distemper.

The healthy looking dog which was kept next to the dying Rottie.

Breed Tendencies

Individual Personalities

Dogs are who they are. Some tendencies are normal for all dogs, but are enhanced in certain breeds, or certain traits were selected for when those breeds were being developed. In modern society, dogs are often purchased on impulse for their looks or size, with no regard for what the breed's intended purpose is (or was). But just because dogs are chosen based on their looks doesn't mean they lose the instincts that have been bred in for generations.

Understand the Dog You Have

If you have a terrier or herding dog, he probably barks a lot and loudly. That's the dog you chose. Ideally, you researched the breed thoroughly before you chose it and can accept a certain amount of your dog's natural doggieness. If you didn't research the breed before you chose it, do it now, for a better understanding of your dog's natural tendencies, if nothing else. You are not ever going to train the instincts out of your dog, but you can learn how to manage your dog and modify or channel some of the behavior.

Dog Aggression

Some breeds have been selectively bred for fighting, often with other dogs. Although some individual dogs in the fighting breeds get along fine with other dogs, many don't, and serious injury or death can result from negligent handling of seriously dog-aggressive dogs. Training can help get control of the dog and teach him an alternate behavior to instigating fights, at least with his owner present, but good management is a big part of living with any dog that has a hard-wired or genetic tendency to fight with other dogs. Owners of dogs that are aggressive to other dogs are smart to work with an experienced trainer to help them modify their dog's behavior.

Shaping Positive Behavior Patterns

Although you are going to have to live with a certain amount of your dog's normal, if annoying, behavior, you can modify the behavior somewhat and reduce its frequency with good management and training, and by actively pursuing legal outlets for your dog to bark, or dig, or chase, or whatever, with the exception of fighting. Teach your dog to bark on command, and let him bark his head off once or twice a day. Make a digging pit for your terrier. Play fetch or Frisbee or set up a lure course for your high-prey-drive dog.
It's difficult, if not impossible, for most dogs to understand not to do something, particularly when that something is as natural to them as breathing. Managing the triggers that cause your dog to engage in the behaviors you want to limit is an important part of modifying behavior. If your dog goes ballistic at the front window every time he sees a jogger go by, close the drapes, or don't let him have access to that window. You may have to do a little investigation to discover what your dog reacts to so you can limit his access to it while you're training.

** Do not get in the middle of a dogfight! You could be seriously injured for your trouble, and there's a good chance that you won't stop the fight by getting in the middle of it anyway. You can try throwing a pail of water on the dogs...

Dangerous Dogs

Breed-specific Considerations

Some breeds of dogs have reputations, although not necessarily deservedly so, as being dangerous. It's not that they necessarily bite more often than other breeds, but due to their physical nature — their size, strength, and bite force — when they do bite, the resulting injury tends to be much more serious (and newsworthy) than that of a less powerful dog.

The Realities

The owners of breeds that are usually on dangerous-dog lists — German shepherd dogs, rottweilers, bull breeds, and some of the mastiff-type dogs among them — have more work to do than do the owners of other breeds. They must make an extra effort to make sure their dogs are well socialized and behaved to help their dog become a canine ambassador for his breed. They also have to manage their dogs responsibly, and not allow them to roam. Unfortunately, some areas have already enacted breed-specific legislation making it illegal to own banned breeds. Of course, criminals aren't law abiding to start with, and aren't known to be the most responsible of dog owners, so when they're the only ones who own the “dangerous breeds,” it doesn't help the reputation of the breed in question.
Many of the so-called dangerous breeds, pit bulls among them, were originally selectively bred to be specifically not aggressive to people, but some irresponsible breeding and handling of individual dogs led to preventable tragedies that have permanently tarnished the breeds' image. The sad statistic is that about two-thirds of serious dog bites are inflicted by pit bulls and rottweilers combined. Unfortunately, nice examples of the breeds in question and their owners often pay the price for the few infamous examples.

What You Can Do

If you own and love a breed of dog that has an unsavory reputation, it's in your best interest, as well as the interest of your individual dog and that of his entire breed, to make sure that he behaves impeccably. If you haven't done the work, or he has some behavior issues, manage him well and train him often to improve both his behavior and image.
Get involved in your dog's breed club to get the advantage of power in numbers to battle issues like breed-specific legislation. It is a big responsibility owning a breed labeled dangerous, but you can make a difference in the future of your chosen breed if you have the energy and commitment to make the effort.

SHY DOG

Living with a Shy or Fearful

Dog

Living with a shy or fearful dog requires patience, commitment, and realistic expectations. If your dog is genetically shy, you're not going to change who she is, no matter how much training you do. You can, however, help her become more comfortable in her own skin, more reliable in her behavior, and more confident in you — all at the same time.

Causes of Shyness

Dogs exhibit fearful or shy behavior for several reasons. The prognosis for successful treatment often depends on the cause. Is the fear new or ongoing? How old was your dog when you first noticed she was fearful? Is she afraid of one or two identifiable things, or is she always skittish and nervous? Early onset of generalized fear and anxiety often indicates a genetic component, while fearful responses to specific things are usually learned.

As mentioned in the sidebar, some dogs learn to be fearful, either in response to a specific, traumatic event, or because fearful behavior has been rewarded, usually by a well-meaning but misguided person trying to make the dog feel better.

What You Can Do to Help Your Dog

As the owner of a shy or fearful dog, your first priority is to get your dog a thorough physical, including blood work with a thyroid function test, to rule out the possibility of a medical basis for fear or anxiety. Then, provide her with calm, confident leadership — all the time, not just in times of stress or crisis — and she'll know you're in control, and won't let anything bad happen to her. By putting yourself between her and whatever or whomever she's afraid of, and giving her specific directions to follow (sit, stay, look), you take the pressure of decision making off her, so she doesn't have to make the awful choice between fight or flight. Fighting (biting) would probably be her last choice, but she would if, in her mind, she had to defend herself; flying (running away) does nothing to solve the problem, and she could possibly injure herself in her panic.

Don't Make It Worse

Never punish or reinforce your dog for exhibiting fearful behavior. It will only make her worse and possibly add aggression to an already unstable temperament. You may feel pity for her, but keep it to yourself, and put on an assertive and cheerful front — pity does her no good. You can live with her the way she is and manage her by limiting her triggers and making sure she is supervised in a way so that she doesn't harm herself or others. Or you can do everything in your power to work her through her fears and gratefully embrace each bit of progress as a milestone. There are some prescription medications that, as an adjunct to behavior modification, can help, as well as alternative treatments like flower essences and therapeutic touch.

** Genetically shy dogs and dogs that weren't socialized early in their lives have a relatively poor prognosis in comparison to dogs who have learned to be fearful in response to specific triggers or events.

Desensitization and Counterconditioning

You have a good chance of modifying your dog's fearful behavior with desensitization, a systematic process of reducing fear; and counterconditioning, which teaches the dog a new reaction in response to his fear triggers. Before you start, make sure you have you have sit and look on command. You're already presenting yourself as a good leader, right?
Desensitization

  • Identify the trigger you want to work on, skateboards, for example.

  • Present your dog with his trigger at a low level of intensity. In this instance, distance is one way to lower the intensity, and making sure the skateboard doesn't move is another. You will have to experiment to find your dog's critical distance, or the closest he can be to the trigger without fear.

  • Teach your dog to sit and “look” at his critical distance. CR/treat for success. Repeat until he's not even thinking about the trigger at that distance

  • Move a little closer to the trigger (or it can move closer to you), 1–5 percent of the distance to start. Work on sit and “look” until the dog is comfortable again.

  • Very gradually, always based on your dog's success, move closer, until you are right next to the trigger and he can still function.

  • Repeat the process with each trigger or each variable (a moving skateboard, for example).

  • If your dog shows fear at any time during the process, back up to where he can be successful.

  • Be patient! It can take days, weeks, or months to make progress.

  • End each session with success.

  • Control the Triggers

It is important to reduce (or eliminate, if possible) your dog's contact with fear triggers during the desensitization/counterconditioning process. Some fears, like thunderstorm phobia, are more difficult to treat, both because you can't control them, and because your dog may be reacting to more than just the obvious triggers (like barometric pressure, not just thunder)
